It would have been nice if Derek could have consulted Jaycee without her entire family being right there. He glanced down at her scrubbing the bread pan, but she gave absolutely no indication that she was even listening to the conversation. Hands on his beltline, he realized she probably didn’t care one way or the other, and although that was like a stab to the heart, he knew it was for the best. “If you’re sure you don’t mind…”

And so, after her parents left, Jaycee made the first excuse she could think of and left the rest of them in the living room, disappearing with a breath and a sigh into the guest bedroom. This was great. Just great. Now she was going to either be exiled to her room every night or forced to act ‘normal’ around everyone else for whole stretches of hours. Oh, yeah. This should be real easy.
